Being bilingual/multilingual means that an individual’s brain will look and work differently than the people that are monolingual
No matter when an individual learns a language, their brain will gain some advantages like higher density of the grey matter (contains most neurons and synapses) and more activity when speaking the second language.
The difference of brain activity between a monolingual and a bilingual is so pronounced and unsurprising (on scans) that it has become a neurological signature in a bilingual brain. When a bilingual switches rapidly between languages (“ bilingual mode”), more activity is shown in the right hemisphere particularly in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex than in an individual that only speaks one language |
